Recovering from Disaster -- Augusty 6th, 2010 10:49 PM CDT
For the past several days, it's been nothing but hell for Gaming Federation; the website first was suspended due to "abusing resources". I can't possibly fathom why we have been accused of this. Nothing as far as additional features needing resources has changed for at least one billing cycle. The hosts never pointed out the culprit of the resource issue or any other helpful information, so the best we could do was remove or edit known resource needy sources, but it wasn't good enough for them the next day and the website was terminated. We're lucky we had a backup made the night before, so hardly anything was lost.
We first switched to a new host located close to the game servers in Dallas, TX, but there were a DNS redirect problem that didn't allow our "gaming-federation.com" link to work, and the only way to see the website was to type in the website's IP and a specific directory, plus the main page of our website was blank. We finally settled the website in a server located in Chicago, IL. Due to this, fast redirect must be fixed, and the firewall has to be setup to allow connections from the game servers, otherwise nothing other than the game itself will work; no admin, stats, fast redirect, nothing. Progress is being made on this problem. Also, because of the accusation of resource hogging from the past host, features like HLstatsX on the new server will slowly but gradually be restored to observe any threshold we might be limited to.
On a last note, I've been informed that the original owner of this layout we're using isn't too pleased that it hasn't changed to be any different from his website since we relaunched. I understand it's been about a month now, but I haven't looked into changing anything simply because I have no intention of keeping this layout, or even using webSPELL as our forum for that matter. As much as I really like having a roster and match tracking and other great features, it's not as organized as I hoped it would be; the theme especially. I don't want to be mean, but I need something cleaner for us to use, and the transaction to get this layout was not worth it at all in the end. I appreciate the work on it, but I'll be looking to have a different forum for us to use later; something much more up-to-date and, hopefully, secure.
Thanks for reading folks. Game on!
Gaming Federation is Reborn -- July 4th, 2010 5:19 PM CDT
Gaming Federation has undergone a drastic makeover and the staff have been very hard at work to bring some change to our community. Everything has been rebuilt from the ground up, and with that comes a new beginning.
No doubt, you have noticed the new website. A lot of time was spent in obtaining a new layout, and we finally got one. We truly hope you'll like it! Let's not forget that a new website means a new forum. That being said, users will need to register again, and members will need to reapply! Everyone is welcome to register, but please do not reapply to Gaming Federation unless you have the free time. If you don't, you're welcome to reapply whenever you can find the time. We need active members in our community.
And so, here we are! Gaming Federation is once again in motion, starting with a clean slate. Let's make the best of this!
Holy enormous update, Batman! -- July 4th, 2010 5:22 PM CDT
First, we bring you a new home, and now we bring you some big changes!
Our system of handling game server admins bans has been restructured. AMXBans and SourceBans will now be used on our 1.6 and Source servers. With the great features they bring, managing admins and bans will be much easier than before, and we will now have the opportunity to cleanly organize donation benefits for admin rights. Our players are also now provided a Ban Request/Protest system that can be used through SourceBans, but will apply to 1.6 servers as well. This will help cut down on forum posts, including the drama by making these requests and protests private between the player and the Gaming Federation staff. All bans have also been erased, and the list of admins per server is being redrafted by the staff. Instructions for admins on using these interfaces can be found in the appropriate section of the forums.
We know a lot of you love stats, and the good news is we have brought back stats to our 1.6 and Source servers! Rather than use PsychoStats like we used last time, we are now using the cleaner and much more supported HLstatsX: CE, which introduces real-time stats tracking and some cool daily awards unique to each game! HLstatsX: CE will also provide itself as a complete ban list for all the servers.
The only drawback with these new features is that now the 1.6 and Source servers rely on our web server's functionality. If our website goes down, some things will definitely be broken on our game servers. It's a rare occurrence, but the possibility exists. Keep in mind that we will attempt to keep this problem to a minimum.
